Workshop Proto Cape

Overview

Many of the tutorials and workshops use the same basic circuit for demonstration.
You may want to build a permanent version as a cape that you will simply install when needed.

What you will need

  • BeagleBone Black
  • BeagleBone expandable case Orange or Black (recommended)
  • AC adapter 5 Volts, 2 Amp (optional)
  • Proto Cape
  • Proto Parts Kit
  • Soldering iron, solder and insulated wires

  • These components are included in the parts kit (PTK-027)
    • (1) Green LED
    • (1) Red LED
    • (1) Yellow LED (Tri-color RGY LED)
    • (1) Push-button (may look different)
    • (5) Resistors 330 Ohms
    • (1) Transistor 2N7000

    Additional component
    • (1) Buzzer 12mm 5V (beeping type)

Instructions

Step 1

Using the photo as a guide, place the components on the Proto Cape. Note that the Buzzer and LEDs are polarized (+) and (-), and must be installed correctly to work.  The convention is longer wire = (+).
The flat face of the transistor is placed against the buzzer. The LED flat spot is to the right (in photo below)

Step 2

Wire the components as shown (soldering required).

Step 3

Solder the P8 and P9 double row pin strip headers as shown.

Step 4

Verify your connections (twice!).

Wiring Listing

  1. P9-14 to resistor1(330 Ohms), other side of resistor to Red LED(+), LED(-) to Ground
  2. P9-16 to resistor2(330 Ohms), other side of resistor to Yellow LED(+), LED(-) to Ground
  3. P8-19 to resistor3(330 Ohms), other side of resistor to Green LED(+), LED(-) to Ground
  4. P8-26 to resistor4(330 Ohms), other side of resistor to Switch, Other side of switch to Ground
  5. Transistor (s) pin to Ground
  6. Transistor (d) pin to Buzzer(-), Buzzer(+) to VDD5V
  7. Transistor (g) pin to resistor5 (330 Ohms), other side of resistor to P8-13

Step 5

Install the cape into the BeagleBone P8 and P9 connector and enjoy the tutorial projects.
